In December 1986 my Department commissioned the Economic and Social Research Institute to carry out an evaluation study of the employment incentive scheme. The objectives of the study were to estimate the net amount of additional employment being generated as a result of the scheme and to measure the net cost, if any, of the scheme to the Exchequer. The final report is at an advanced stage of preparation and will be submitted to my Department shortly. On receipt of the report I will consider what action, if any, is necessary.
