The foregoing figures relate to notifications of proposed redundancies received in my Department during the year, not to actual redundancies. An examination recently carried out by my Department in respect of a three year period showed that approximately 7 per cent of notifications of proposed redundancies are not subsequently implemented. On this basis, the number of actual redundancies qualified under the Redundancy Payment Acts during 1988 would be slightly over 21,400.
I do not have any information in respect of non-notifiable redundancies i.e those who do not come within the scope of the Redundancy Payments Acts.
