Vol. 386 No. 5

Written Answers. - River Feale Fish Kills.

24.

asked the Minister for the Marine whether there have been 35 recorded fish kills on the River Feale, County Limerick over the past 15 years; and the action which has been taken to deal with this constant destruction of the river and its fish life.

Information available to my Department indicates that there were 30 recorded incidents of fish kills on the River Feale since 1973.

The Shannon Regional Fisheries Board and Kerry County Council have been actively involved in the prevention and control of water pollution in this district. Sources of pollution have been identified and prosecutions against offenders undertaken. Several cases await hearing by the courts.

Following persistent pressure by the board and the council, substantial improving measures have been undertaken by the principal offenders during the past 18 months. This should hopefully eliminate the problem at that source.
