Vol. 386 No. 5

Order of Business (Resumed).

Is the Taoiseach aware, or have any representations been made to him of the fact that the main thorough-fare from Dublin to west and north-west Donegal has been closed for the past eight days at Lifford Bridge and is causing great inconvenience both to local people and those travelling on that road?

Clearly that matter is not in order now and the Deputy knows that full well.

Deputy Doyle raised a matter of vital national importance here this morning.

Please, Deputy, the Chair ruled on that matter.

The Government must be concerned. Surely clarification of what happened is justified.

The Deputy will resume his seat. It is most audacious of the Deputy to raise a matter already ruled out of order.

I wish to seek your permission, Sir, to raise on the Adjournment today the question of the four inquests into prison deaths in 1988, the recommendations of the juries in respect of a number of those inquests and the absence of any response from the Minister for Justice to the riders introduced at those inquests.

I am aware of the Deputy's interest in the matter and will communicate with him.

Have the Government any intention of introducing an amendment to the Wildlife Act, 1976 to remove the protective status of the badger under the provisions of that Act in the light of the report that has been produced concerning TB in cattle?

Is this legislation promised?

What do they intend doing with regard to the recommendations contained in that report? Do they intend to commission a scientific, as opposed to an economists' report, on that issue?

Perhaps the Deputy would put down an appropriate question on the matter. It is not relevant to legislation promised.

I presume, then, that the Government intend doing nothing about the issue.

There will be another time for that, Deputy.

A Cheann Comhairle, I wish to seek your permission to raise on the Adjournment the question of the lack of adequate financing of VEC schools in County Kildare with a consequent loss of classes, teachers and a general downgrading of the service.

I will communicate with the Deputy.
