Vol. 397 No. 9

Written Answers. - School Benefits.

Gerry O'Sullivan

Question:

307 Mr. G. O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the fact that some children attending the Model National School in Cork are being denied the normal benefits to which they are entitled and have been informed that they have been struck off the roll since 26 February 1990 even though they are still attending school; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The staffing of national schools for a particular school year is determined by the enrolment in the school on 30 September of the previous year. This is in accordance with the agreement reached between the Government and the INTO under the Programme for National Recovery. The authorised staffing for this school is principal plus two assistants.

The pupils referred to by the Deputy have not been in attendance at a programme of instruction approved by my Department at the school since 5 February, 1990. Under the Rules for National Schools, a pupil who does not remain under the instruction of the approved programme cannot be regarded as in attendance at the school. These pupils were not present at roll call since 5 February 1990.
