Vol. 399 No. 4

Ceisteanna-Questions. Oral Answers. - County Waterford Garda Stations Staffing.

Austin Deasy

Question:

31 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Justice the number of gardaí in each Garda station in Waterford city and county; and the number of clerical staff and their location.

The information sought by the Deputy is set out in a table which I propose to circulate in the Official Report.

The precise allocation of gardaí to individual stations varies from time to time in the light of changing needs and circumstances. The numbers assigned to Waterford Garda station, which is the divisional headquarters for the Waterford-Kilkenny Division, and to Dungarvan and Tramore stations, which are district headquarters stations, include specialised staff and units that operate on a Divisional or District basis.

I appreciate that the answer is in a tabular form but I would like the Minister to give me details of the clerical staff involved because I understand the number is very small.

So far as additional clerical staff is concerned, Waterford will get every consideration in regard to the allocation of clerical staff where their assignment would put members of the Force back on the beat. The Garda authorities' response to my request to identify posts which can be filled by clerical staff is not to hand. However, I understand it is nearing completion and will include a recommendation to assign some staff to stations in Waterford.

Will the Minister pay particular attention to Tramore where there are no clerical staff at the moment and there is a need for them?

I am awaiting the Garda authorities' review of their requirements of clerical staff and I will bring to the Garda authorities' attention the view of Deputy Deasy in relation to Tramore.
