Vol. 399 No. 4

Written Answers. - Unclaimed Stolen/Lost Property.

Richard Bruton

Question:

50 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Justice the value of the proceeds from the sale of stolen but unclaimed goods by the State; the use to which these funds are applied; and if he will consider using some or all of the proceeds to augment the funds of the Association for Victim Support.

Proceeds from the sale by the Garda Síochána of unclaimed stolen and lost property are paid into the Exchequer as appropriations in aid of the Garda Síochána Vote. This procedure is in accordance with the provisions of section 58 of the Dublin Police Act, 1842, and section 9 of the Constabulary (Ireland) Act, 1874, as adapted, and there are no proposals to change it. The amounts received from such sales in 1989 and in 1990 to date were £23,447 and £15,645, respectively.

The Irish Association for Victim Support, which provide non-financial support services for the victims of crime, received a grant of £8,000 from my Department in 1989, and there are no proposals for augmenting the funds of this association in the way suggested.
