Vol. 400 No. 3

Control of Horses Bill, 1990: First Stage.

I move:

That leave be granted to introduce a Bill entitled an Act to provide for the control, registration, sale, grazing and stabling on non-thoroughbred horses; for the prevention of cruelty to such animals; for the imposition of penalties and for related matters.

This is important legislation urgently required to deal with the serious problem of non-thoroughbred horses in urban areas. I hope we will have the full support to all parties in the House on this Bill.

Is the Bill opposed?

In view of the great co-operation the Government are receiving from the House these days I am very glad to be able to say that, in a spirit of co-operation, we do not intend to oppose this important legislation.

Question put and agreed to.

Second Stage will be taken in Private Member's time in accordance with Standing Orders.
