Question:

227 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Health the number of applicants currently awaiting heart by-pass operations; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

There are 730 patients awaiting coronary artery by-pass grafts at present.

The Mater Hospital, Dublin, is the major centre in the State for open heart surgery and officials of my Department are at present in discussions with the Mater authorities with a view to increasing the present level of cardiac surgery at the hospital.
