Vol. 413 No. 6

Written Answers. - Local Authority Housing Refurbishment.

Tony Gregory

Question:

54 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for the Environment if he intends to visit Dublin's inner city corporation flats complexes to familiarise himself with their special needs in the context of Dublin Corporation's repeated requests for additional funding for refurbishment there.

The eight estates to which the corporation gave the highest priority rating have been designated for special funding under the remedial works scheme. To date, the corporation have been allocated over £18 million in respect of these projects, including an allocation of £5.6 million for 1991. The financial commitments on these projects and the overall high level of demand by local authorities for funding under the scheme would not allow the designation of further estates at this stage.

I am, of course, familiarising myself with all matters within my area of responsibility but I should point out that the management, maintenance and improvement of their housing estates, and the fixing of priorities between different estates, are matters for the local authority in which it would not be appropriate for me to intervene.
