456 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Education whether the payment out of State funds of teachers of religion in vocational schools was always the practice; if not, when this practice was formally authorised by his Department; and if he will make a statement on the implications of this matter.

It was the practice for some considerable time to pay teachers of religion in vocational schools from State funds. Following consultation with interested parties, the position was formalised in 1979 with the issue of a departmental circular letter.
