Vol. 415 No. 5

Ceisteanna — Questions Written Answers. - Protection of Personal Data.

Ivor Callely

Question:

16 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice the measures that will be introduced to protect the general public from their personal details being sold to direct marketing companies; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Data Protection Act, 1988 imposes restrictions on the collection, processing, use and disclosure of automated personal data.

It also gave individuals the right to have their names removed from direct marketing lists.

Any contraventions of the Act or complaints by members of the public are investigated by the Data Protection Commissioner, who is responsible for supervising the implementation of the Act.
