Vol. 417 No. 5

Adjournment Debate Matters.

I wish to advise the House of the following matters in respect of which notice has been given to me under Standing Order 20 (3) (a) and the name of the Member in each case: (1) Deputy Ferris: the statement made by St. James's Hospital that it has reached its capacity to deal with the AIDS and HIV problem, and that it has increased its bed allocation for HIV and AIDS patients therefold in recent weeks, and the action the Minister for Health is taking in this regard; (2) Deputy V. Brady: the need for the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications to re-appoint the Broadcasting Complaints Commission which was the only vehicle available to deal with complaints from the public regarding broadcasting standards; (3) Deputy Dukes: the proposal by the Bush Administration to grant further military aid to the Government of El Salvador, amounting to $35 million for 1992 and $40 million for 1993, in contravention of the spirit of the New York peace accords; (4) Deputy Cotter: the inclusion of Interregnum funding in the allocation of road grants to the Border counties, the unfairness of the practice and the lack of additionality in the application of this special funding for Border counties; (5) Deputy Nealon: the shortage of nursing staff in St. John's Geriatric Hospital, Sligo, which has led to a mandate by members of the Irish Nursing Organisation for industrial action in April; (6) Deputy Deenihan: the serious concern in County Kerry regarding the serious oil pollution of the beaches and the severe financial pressure that will result for Kerry council and if he has any plans to provide financial assistance for the council; (7) Deputy Fennell: the serious matter of mental hospital reports which, despite a statutory obligation under the Mental Treatment Act, 1945, that the inspector or mental hospitals should annually lay his reports before the Oireachtas, the last one available is for 1982; (8) Deputy Garland: the failure by the Government to respond to the major environmental crisis caused by rotting meat at Creggagh, Strokestown, which seems beyond the capabilities of Roscommon County Council to solve.

I have selected for discussion the matters raised by Deputies V. Brady, Ferris and Dukes.
