Vol. 420 No. 6

Written Answers. - Garda Numbers.

Bernard Allen

Question:

70 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Justice if he will outline the present ratio of gardaí to the population in the counties and cities of Cork, Waterford, Limerick and Dublin and the Counties of Kerry and Tipperary; the corresponding ratio of reported crime to population in each case; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Garda authorities inform me that the pattern of Garda Divisional boundaries and the basis on which records are maintained are such that it is not possible to give figures for the ratio of the level of Garda manpower or crime figures to the population of the counties or cities in question. The population of an area is, of course, only one of many factors taken into account by the Garda authorities in deciding on the allocation of Garda manpower.
