Vol. 426 No. 6

Written Answers. - County Mayo Harbour.

Enda Kenny

Question:

33 Mr. E. Kenny asked the Minister for the Marine the plans, if any, he has to provide an extension to Ballyglass Harbour, Ballyglass, County Mayo; if he will authorise a hydro-graphic survey in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Department of the Marine's current fishery harbour development programme which runs until the end of this year makes no provision for works at Ballyglass Harbour.

An outline development programme to cover the period 1994 to 1997 is currently being finalised with a view to securing support under the new rounds of Structural Funds. This programme will rely to a significant extent on the priorities submitted by the various maritime local authorities, as well as taking account of various other factors including landings, fish stocks, size of local fleet, employment and potential employment. Ballyglass Harbour is among the harbours whose development has been proposed by Mayo County Council and whose inclusion in the new development programme is being considered by the Department. Pending finalisation of the programme and clarification of the total funding available, I am not in a position, at this stage, to say for definite if any funds can be made available for development works at Ballyglass Harbour.
