Vol. 463 No. 5

Written Answers. - Remedial Teacher Appointments.

Godfrey Timmins

Question:

45 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Education when she intends to appoint further remedial teachers; the number she proposes to appoint in 1996; and the projected figure for 1997. [4936/96]

Thomas Foxe

Question:

73 Mr. T. Foxe asked the Minister for Education the plans, if any, she has to appoint a remedial teacher to the national schools of Athleague and Fuerty, County Roscommon; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [6197/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 45 and 73, together.

I am not in a position at present to make additional remedial teacher posts available. I am keeping the position regarding medical needs under ongoing review. Any decision on further remedial teacher allocations will be taken in the light of the level of identified need and resource availability.

Given the level of competing demands in the special needs area, I regret that it is not possible to meet the needs of all pupils for remedial teaching. Unfortunately, I do not have access to unlimited resources.
