Vol. 467 No. 3
11 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Social Welfare the current status of the efforts to address the issue of accessible transport with operators receiving funding from the free travel pass scheme. [12788/96]
As the Deputy is aware from previous questions she has raised on this matter, I undertook to contact each of the transport operators currently participating in the free travel pass scheme on the question of accessible transport. There are currently 52 operators which include the CIE Group, Northern Ireland Railways, 37 private bus operators, 11 private ferry operators and two private airline operators. Last November my Department wrote to the 48 transport operators who were in the scheme at that time requesting details of any arrangements which they had in place to cater for the specific needs of disabled or infirm people wishing to use their transport services.
In particular, the transport operators were asked:
(1)if their drivers were encouraged to assist disabled passengers in embarking or disembarking from their vehicles,
(2)if they had boarding ramps to enable wheelchair to embark and disembark in safety,
(3)if they had spaces on board their vehicles which were set aside for the exclusive use of disabled passengers,
(4)what plans, if any, they had to provide such facilities in the near future, and
(5)if they had any other ideas how access for disabled people might be improved on the transport services they provide.
To date, a total of 36 written replies have been received and reminders have issued to those operators who have not yet responded. Most of the operators who replied have indicated that they were able to provide some form of facility for the disabled. All of them stated that their drivers assist disabled people in whatever way possible. Some respondents said that they would be prepared to adapt their vehicles or invest in new ones if they received financial assistance from my Department.
