Vol. 467 No. 3

Written Answers. - Intervention Beef.

Joe Walsh

Question:

110 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the volume of beef accepted from Ireland at the last EU Beef Management Committee meeting. [13154/96]

Irish beef processors lodged bids for a total of 500 tonnes of beef under the intervention tender of 11 June. However, these bids were not accepted by the EU Commission at the Beef Management Committee Meeting of 14 June, as they were outside the parameters set down in Article 14 of EU Regulation 2456/93. Only bids which are below the average market price, recorded in the previous week plus a processors margin of 10 ECU, can be considered for acceptance. As the bids received from Irish traders were above this price they were ruled ineligible.
