Vol. 470 No. 2

Written Answers. - School Placement.

Micheál Martin

Question:

126 Mr. Martin asked the Minister for Education the steps, if any, she will take to secure a place in a local secondary school for a person (details supplied) in County Cork. [18800/96]

I am aware of the case referred to by the Deputy.

The selection and enrolment of pupils in secondary schools is, in the first instance the responsibility of individual schools. In this particular case, my Department's inspectorate has endeavoured, by a process of consultation with school management and the child's parents, to have the pupil placed in a school where the normal examination syllabus is followed. While these efforts have not secured a placement in the school of her choice, nevertheless, a suitable placement is available to her in a school in her locality and this has been communicated to the family in question.
