Vol. 475 No. 6

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

David Andrews

Question:

137 Mr. Andrews asked the Minister for Justice if she will appoint a member of the Garda Síochána to inspector rank to take responsibility for O'Connell Street, Dublin, and areas surrounding this thoroughfare, similar to an appointment made in 1992 which was terminated in 1995; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [5580/97]

The allocation of Garda personnel is the responsibility of the Garda authorities and they have informed me that in February 1993, an inspector from Store Street was given specific responsibility for policing in O'Connell Street. Since 1995 policing in O'Connell Street has been carried out by the unit inspectors attached to Store Street station.

The Garda authorities are satisfied that the policing arrangements for O'Connell Street are satisfactory and the local divisional officer will continue to ensure that the area receives priority attention.
