Vol. 476 No. 3

Written Answers. - Policy for the Elderly.

Ivor Callely

Question:

51 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Health his views on the report entitled, The Years Ahead, A Policy for the Elderly; the recommendations, if any, of this report which have been implemented; and the recommendations still to be implemented; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6956/97]

Limerick East): As the Deputy will be aware, the report The Years Ahead — A Policy for the Elderly is the cornerstone of policy for the elderly. The principal recommendations of the report were to maintain older people in dignity and independence at home with the support of the community care services where necessary and, when this was no longer possible, to ensure that they had access to the best possible medical and long-term care. Considerable progress has been made in the implementation of the recommendations of the report.

In addition, a review of the implementation of recommendations contained in The Years Ahead report has been carried out on behalf of the National Council for the Elderly by and independent research team and is due to be presented to the council very shortly. It is expected that the report will be published and this will give a thorough insight into the position in relation to implementation of the various recommendations.
