Question:

152 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if the Government intends to alternate postal charges throughout the State; and if she will sanction further postal rate increases in the foreseeable future. [18610/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 56 and 152 together.

There are no plans to vary the manner in which An Post's uniform postal charges apply throughout the State.
Under the provisions of the Postal and Telecommunications Services Act, 1983, An Post may not increase basic postal charges without my concurrence.
I will be making a statement in relation to An Post's mail tariff structure within the next few weeks.
