Vol. 483 No. 2

Written Answers. - Services for the Elderly.

Olivia Mitchell

Question:

64 Ms O. Mitchell asked the Minister for Health and Children when he will bring suggestions to the Government on the way in which the situation of the elderly in our society can be improved as recently announced by the Minister of State at his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19822/97]

I am currently in the process of consulting with the various organisations in promoting the interests of older people. Following these consultations, it is my intention to prepare plans for the further development of services for older people based on the priority needs identified. In the interim, the current programme of replacing older extended care facilities with smaller scale community nursing units for older people closer to their homes will be enhanced. It is also the intention to improve the range of day facilities available for older people as well as other community support services.
