Written Answers. - Premium Payments.

Willie Penrose

Question:

23 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the effort, if any, he is making for payment of the extensification premiums on the ewe quotas; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23320/97]

Derek McDowell

Question:

50 Mr. McDowell asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the efforts, if any, he is making for payment of the extensification premium on the ewe quota; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23357/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 23 and 50 together.

An extensification premium is not payable in the sheepmeat sector. I made representations to the European Commission earlier this year for the introduction of an extensification premium, but the Commission has not agreed to this request. They consider that the extensification premium is not justified in the sheepmeat sector in view of the fact sheep producers receive the rural world premium. However, I intend to continue to press this issue with the Commission at every possible opportunity.
