Vol. 487 No. 5

Written Answers - Roads Funding.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

110 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government whether he has received submissions from the local authorities of Kildare, Meath and Offaly requesting grant aid towards the upgrading and improvement of the road from Enfield to Edenderry via Johnstownbridge, County Kildare; if he will approve this proposal in 1998; if he will make the necessary moneys available for the works involved; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4431/98]

Kildare County Council made a submission to my Department in June 1997, supported by Offaly County Council, for special funding for the R402 EdenderryEnfield road. Both councils were informed that there were no special funds available but that it was open to them to include relevant sections of the road in their restoration programmes or to submit applications in respect of the project under the EU co-financed scheme of nonnational roads projects.

Offaly County Council included an application for funding for Kishawanny Bridge, which is on the road in their applications for 1998 EU co-financed grants. In the event, two other applications from Offaly County Council — the R420 Greshill-Tullamore and the Kinnity Culvert reconstruction — have been selected for funding under the scheme in 1998. Kildare County Council and Meath County Council did not include any applications for funding for this road in their EU applications for 1998.

It would be open to Kildare, Meath and Offaly county councils to consider whether to submit applications for funding for this project under the EU co-financed scheme of grants in 1999.
