Vol. 487 No. 8

Written Answers. - Road Signs.

Enda Kenny

Question:

82 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government his Department's policy in relation to road signs in Gaeltacht areas; whether these should be bilingual or in Irish only; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5335/98]

The requirements for the use of Irish and English text in all traffic signs are set out in the traffic signs manual which was published by my Department in December 1996. A copy of the manual is available in the Oireachtas Library. It is a requirement that the names of places in Gaeltacht areas should only be shown in Irish on information signs in such areas. The text on all other information signs and on warning signs must be in both Irish and English except where there is a danger, in the case of some roadworks and warning signs, that the impact of the message would be affected by the amount of text. In such circumstances separate Irish and English signs should be used.
