Vol. 488 No. 6

Written Answers. - Probation and Welfare Service.

Question:

122 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of times the review group on the probation and welfare service has met; the current status of this work; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6763/98]

As the Deputy is probably aware, I established an independent expert review group on 14 November 1997, chaired by Mr. Brian McCarthy, chairman of FEXCO, to review the probation and welfare service.

It is my understanding that the group has met on five occasions so far having held its first meeting in January 1998. I also understand that a number of future meetings of the group are planned.

I am not in a position to comment further on the current status of the group's work.
