Vol. 489 No. 4

Written Answers. - Partnership for Peace.

Olivia Mitchell

Question:

65 Ms O. Mitchell asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will outline Government policy in relation to joining Partnership for Peace. [8247/98]

In the course of recent exchanges in this House on the question of Irish participation in Partnership for Peace, I indicated the willingness of the Government to have a debate on the subject in the Dáil, so that the range of views on this matter could be heard. Since then, the Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs has begun discussions on developments in European security architecture, which of course includes Partnership for Peace. I understand that the committee is likely to have further discussions on this subject in the future. I welcome these discussions which should facilitate in due course, in the light of the committee's deliberations and conclusions, an informed and inclusive debate in the Dáil at a time to be agreed between the Whips.
