Vol. 489 No. 5

Written Answers. - Road Haulage.

Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Question:

20 Mrs. B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if her attention has been drawn to the serious effect of overloaded lorries on roads from a safety viewpoint; if she will introduce legislation to make the consigner of these loads responsible in law; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [8375/98]

It is my intention to reintroduce the Road Transport Bill later this year. A provision designed to amend the Road Traffic Acts to make consignors liable to prosecution in cases of overweight haulage, which was contained in the 1997 Bill, will form part of the new Bill.
