Vol. 489 No. 6

Written Answers. - Motor Fines.

John Bruton

Question:

479 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the plans, if any, he has to increase the powers of traffic wardens to enable them to check on tax and insurance of illegally parked vehicles. [8673/98]

All traffic wardens are empowered to issue fixed penalty notices, commonly known as on-the-spot notices, in respect of the offence of not displaying a motor tax disc in a vehicle in the appropriate manner. Traffic wardens employed by the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform are also empowered to issue on-the-spot fine notices in respect of the offence of non-display of an insurance disc.

The operation of on-the-spot fines is gradually being extended and, as part of this process, I will consider the merits of empowering all traffic wardens in relation to non-display of insurance discs.
