Vol. 490 No. 5

Written Answers. - Road Traffic Laws.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

262 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to increased incidences of road rage; the measures, if any, he proposes to combat the problem; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10796/98]

The Road Traffic Acts, 1961-1995, provide for a broad range of offences which probably comprehend the kind of behaviour understood by the term "road rage". These offences include dangerous driving, careless driving, driving without reasonable consideration for other persons using the roads, and speeding. When such offences are detected, appropriate action is taken. The Garda authorities have assured me that the high priority given to enforcement of the road traffic laws will continue with the primary aim of reducing the high rate of accidents and, in addition, of bringing home to motorists the need to exercise at all times due care and consideration for other road users.
