Vol. 490 No. 6

Written Answers. - Departmental Staff.

Michael D. Higgins

Question:

35 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the measures, if any, she has taken or proposes to take as a result of her meeting with architectural and heritage staff in relation to recruitment of permanent staff and fair employment conditions for contract staff. [10753/98]

I had a meeting with the trade union IMPACT on 24 March in relation to contractors engaged by my Department to carry out specific tasks — a situation which my Department inherited from the Office of Public Works during the Deputy's tenure as Minister. Since then my Department has been in consultation with the Department of Finance to decide how the services in question might best be provided in the future. These consultations are ongoing.
