Vol. 491 No. 2

Written Answers. - Multi-Party Agreement.

Proinsias De Rossa

Question:

103 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the steps, if any, his Department will take arising from the commitment in the Good Friday Agreement to take further active steps to demonstrate its respect for the different traditions on the island of Ireland; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9272/98]

The Government is committed to the full implementation of the Multi-Party Agreement which was signed on Good Friday. The Agreement is based on partnership, equality and mutual respect for the different traditions. The Government regards its commitment to demonstrate its continued respect for the different traditions in the island of Ireland as an important aspect of the Agreement and will be working actively to fulfil it.

I have established an interdepartmental committee on the development of the Battle of the Boyne site. The committee, whose second meeting was held in the Boyne area last Thursday, is making good progress in bringing forward firm proposals for this important and historic project. The committee will liaise closely with local community groups, whose important contribution I greatly appreciate.

I would also draw the Deputy's attention to the decision of the Government to contribute financially towards the First World War Memorial in Messines in Belgium.

The Government will be examining the potential for further measures in this area in a positive and constructive spirit.
