Vol. 495 No. 1

Written Answers. - Mental Health Services.

Michael Noonan

Question:

254 Mr. Noonan asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will support the application of the Mid-Western Mental Health Association who have applied for the use of the old labour exchange building at Cecil Street, Limerick, as a support centre for persons with mental illness; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19376/98]

I am aware that the Limerick Mental Health Association in consultation with the Mid-Western Health Board has proposed to develop a support centre for persons with mental health problems and have identified the old labour exchange in Cecil Street, Limerick, as a suitable premises for the proposed development. The board has requested that my Department make representations, on its behalf to the owners of the property — the Office of Public Works — for a transfer of ownership of the property which would allow for the development of this project.

I wish to advise the Deputy that my Department is pursuing the matter with the Department of Finance to see if the board's request can be facilitated and it is expected that a response will be issued to the board in the near future.
