Vol. 495 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Seán Haughey

Question:

370 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to the serious concern of local residents in an estate (details supplied) in Dublin 5 in relation to drug dealing on greens and on the streets; the action, if any, the Garda propose to take in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19563/98]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that two community gardaí perform regular foot patrols in the area. The two gardaí assigned to the area liaise with the district drug unit in order to try and prevent the type of activity to by the Deputy.

I have also been informed that this initiative is considered to have been successful to date and a number of persons are currently before the courts charged with offences under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

The Garda authorities have informed me that they are aware of local concerns and I have been assured that this area will continue to receive appropriate attention.
