Vol. 497 No. 4

Written Answers - Deaths by Violence.

Jim Higgins

Question:

136 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of deaths in violent circumstances reported to the Gardaí to date in 1998; the number of people charged in respect of these; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25326/98]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that deaths in violent circumstances have resulted in the recording of 28 murders and seven manslaughters to date in 1998.

I understand that 21 persons are recorded as having been charged in respect of 20 of these cases.
