Question:

269 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the plans, if any, he has to resolve the water crisis at Murrisk, Westport, County Mayo, which is hindering planning development in the area and causing hardship to families and in view of the fact there is no water scheme in Murrisk. [26362/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 268 and 269 together.

A brief for a major scheme to serve Westport, Louisburgh, Newport and Mulranny, including Murrisk, has been submitted to my Department. The local authority has been requested to review its proposals, which have an estimated cost of £20.5 million in the light of the approvals under the second tranche of the serviced land initiative relating to the augmentation of the water supply schemes at Newport and Mulranny, and in the context of an assessment of medium and long-term needs for water services capital works in the county.
