Vol. 502 No. 2

Written Answers. - Company Closures.

Michael Bell

Question:

31 Mr. Bell asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the consultations, if any, which have taken place with a company (details supplied) in County Louth in relation to the three months closure announcement; the steps her Department has taken to ensure the continuation of this important industry; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [7451/99]

Enterprise Ireland was informed by Premier Periclase that it was announcing a three month production stoppage commencing 1 April 1999. No prior consultation took place between the company and Enterprise Ireland.

I am advised by Enterprise Ireland that the company proposes to supply its customers with magnesia from existing stocks and to resume full production by August 1999. The company has informed Enterprise Ireland that it will continue to undertake research and development in an effort to develop new products in a changing market. Enterprise Ireland is in discussions with the company in this regard. I have asked Enterprise Ireland to continue to monitor the situation and keep me informed of developments.
