Vol. 502 No. 5

Written Answers. - Common Fisheries Policy.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

29 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the current and proposed positions in respect of Ireland's attitude to the common fisheries policy; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8553/99]

Ireland's long-standing position on the common fisheries policy is that our allocated share of fish stocks under the common fisheries policy falls far short of a fair and equitable level. Ireland's case in that regard remains on the table and I will take every opportunity to advocate and advance the case. Apart from the key matter of allocations, Ireland has generally taken the view that while the basic principles of the common fisheries policy are well balanced, there is considerable scope for improvement and change on an ongoing basis.

I am committed to vigorously pursuing change within the CFP framework which will improve Ireland's position including improved conservation measures and a level playing field on control and enforcement of the rules. The 2002 review of the common fisheries policy will be a key opportunity to pursue change in the interests of the Irish fishing industry. I have therefore established a National CFP Strategy Review Group which will inform our negotiating position in the run up to and during the review.
