36 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if he has appointed the pelagic market co-ordinator and the industry team which is expected to work with the co-ordinator; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8561/99]
In line with the recommendation by the Task Force on the Management and Marketing of Herring, and with my approval, BIM is recruiting a pelagic market co-ordinator to facilitate and drive market coordination and cooperative strategies for the herring and mackerel sector. BIM have advised that an appointment is expected shortly. The appointee will work closely with the industry-led pelagic industry marketing group, also established on foot of a task force recommendation, which is working to develop and co-ordinate sectoral strategies to maximise returns to Irish herring processors and exporters.
