Vol. 506 No. 2

Written Answers. - Garda Training.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

364 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the degree to which ultra-modern training techniques are available to the Garda; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15494/99]

The training provided by the Garda Síochána at the Garda Training College, on the job and at in-service training schools is of a high standard. Indeed, the Garda College has an international reputation in police training and the facilities at Templemore are regarded as being of excellent quality.

The duration and structure of the training programme for recruits, two years, and its content reflect the high investment in student-probationer training and the commitment of the Garda authorities to ensuring that recruits are fully equipped to meet the demands that will be placed upon them as members of the force. Successful students are awarded a diploma in policing studies and the course content is accredited by the National Council for Educational Awards.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that ultra-modern training techniques are available to members in specialised areas. Personnel at the technical bureau engaged in forensic examinations are trained at recognised and accredited institutions both here and abroad. The technical bureau is equipped with the most up to date technology and is comparable with the finest European technical support sections.
The Garda Síochána is constantly seeking to upgrade and develop training practices and techniques to reflect best practices in training and education.
