Vol. 506 No. 2

Written Answers. - Student Support Schemes.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

384 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Education and Science the support, if any, available to a person (details supplied) in County Donegal who has applied to a college in England; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14829/99]

The student support schemes operated under the aegis of my Department do not provide assistance towards attendance at postgraduate courses outside Ireland. There are no other funds at the disposal of my Department out of which financial assistance could be made available to the candidate to whom the Deputy refers, in respect of his postgraduate studies at St. Martin's College, Cumbria, England.

I would mention that the British Council offers advice and assistance to Irish students studying in Britain and his information on scholarships offered by the British Government to Irish and other EU students. The address and telephone number are British Council Offices, New Mount House, 22-24 Lower Mount Street, Dublin 2, 01-6764088.

Under the terms of the third level student support schemes, maintenance grants and tuition fees are payable to eligible students pursuing approved postgraduate courses in Northern Ireland.

My Department has made inquiries with County Donegal vocational education committee and I understand that the student in question is currently in receipt of a VEC scholarship grant in respect of the undergraduate course he is pursuing in the University of Ulster. He will qualify for funding for the proposed postgraduate course provided that he continues to meet the conditions of the VEC scholarships scheme.

I further understand that the VEC will respond directly to a recent inquiry from the student in question on the availability of funding for the proposed postgraduate course.
