Question:

442 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason he is not continuing the funding for teachers to take courses in use of computers; and if he will arrange immediately to restore this funding which has been available up to recently. [15313/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 402 and 442 together.

I wish to assure the Deputy that I have no intention of discontinuing the funding for teachers to take courses in the use of computers. In fact, 24,000 places on information and communication technology (ICT) courses were made available to first and second level teachers during 1998. This substantial number was necessary during the first year of the schools IT 2000 programme in order to cater for the demand generated by this innovative project. During the current year the number of available places on such courses will be at least 21,000. I will be making funding available for similar provision in 2000 also. In this way all teachers in the system will have every opportunity to develop their ICT skills.
