Vol. 506 No. 4

Written Answers. - Hospital Services.

Enda Kenny

Question:

79 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Health and Children if he has received representations regarding the appointment of a rheumatologist and the setting up of a rheumatology unit in Mayo General Hospital; the examinations, if any, he has made into this request; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15659/99]

The provision of medical services at Mayo General Hospital is a matter for the Western Health Board in the first instance. I understand from the board that an assessment of the needs of the rheumatology service throughout the region is currently under way with a view to preparing a corporate strategic plan for the development of the service over the next five years. Until this review is complete, it would be too early for me to comment on the need for a rheumatologist and a rheumatology service at Mayo General Hospital. I understand however that the board envisages that it is likely that the review will point to a need for an enhancement of the region's rheumatology services. Upon receipt of the completed strategic review my Department will be in a position to consider the case for making further investment in rheumatology services in the western region in consultation with the Western Health Board and having regarding to competing demands on available resources.
