Under section 2 of the Food Hygiene Regulations, 1950 (Commencement of Part IV) Order, 1951, as amended, restaurant is defined as a "premises in which is carried on the business of selling meals to the public". The health boards have responsibility for the registration of restaurants.
I have sought the information requested by the Deputy and, based on returns I have received from the health boards, I am advised that there are approximately 6,610 restaurants currently registered and operating in Ireland. The number of restaurants currently registered and operating in each health board area is as follows:
