Vol. 508 No. 3

Written Answers - Road Safety.

Louis J. Belton

Question:

73 Mr. Belton asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the plans, if any, he has in the interests of road safety to mount a television advertising campaign to educate motorists on the way in which to avoid the most common driving errors which lead to accidents; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18735/99]

Responsibility for developing and disseminating road safety advertisements and publicity is assigned to the National Safety Council which promotes on TV and other media awareness campaigns on road safety on a continuing basis. The focusing of these campaigns is a matter for the council having regard to the prioritisation by the Government Strategy for Road Safety 1998-2002 of the key areas of speeding, drink driving and seat belt wearing.

In addition to major national campaigns, the council also supports and encourages the organisation of projects and initiatives at local and community levels.

I will arrange that the concern stated in the question about the need to counteract common driving errors is brought to the attention of the National Safety Council.
