Question:

173 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of prisoners in the new women's prison at Mountjoy; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22823/99]

The new women's prison at Mountjoy has been built to accommodate 80 prisoners. Commissioning by the Office of Public Works will take place in the next few days and prisoners will be transferred to the new accommodation shortly.

174 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if the new midlands prison in Portlaoise is ready; the number of prisoners it will accommodate; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22824/99]

Construction of the main prison, which was to provide 400 places is almost complete. However, an additional wing is being added with a capacity of 115. Construction is due for completion in March 2000 giving a total capacity of 515.
