Written Answers. - Early School Leavers.

John McGuinness

Question:

401 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Education and Science the progress, if any, in relation to the case of a person (details supplied) in County Kilkenny who is seeking further education and training and was assessed recently by an official of his Department; if he will give details of the case and the report; and the action, if any, he will take. [23544/99]

This is the case of a person who left second level schooling in 1992. Following a parliamentary question last year, a psychologist from my Department visited the person in the person's home. Having ascertained that the person was seeking support in relation to possible further educational opportunities which might be available, a full psychological assessment was carried out. The psychologist met with the person on four more occasions and provided appropriate information, which included names and addresses of relevant organisations, as well as advice on a range of available options. He also met with the person's mother on three occasions. No information is available as to whether the advice given was acted upon by the person in question or the by person's mother.
