Vol. 510 No. 6

Written Answers. - Single Sex Schools.

Gay Mitchell

Question:

403 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Education and Science the incentives, if any, in place to encourage single sex national schools to become co-educational in view of the concerns of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 12 and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23580/99]

My Department does not offer any incentives to encourage single sex schools to become co-educational. However it is of course open to individual boards of management of sin gle sex schools to approach my Department with a request to change the status of any such school.

In considering any such request for a change in status, my Department would have to take various matters into account such as the suitability of the schools buildings to accommodate a co-educational approach and the impact that a change of status may have on the enrolments of other schools in the locality.
