Vol. 512 No. 1

Written Answers. - Disabled Drivers Scheme.

John McGuinness

Question:

163 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will expedite an application by a person (details supplied) in County Carlow to have his car converted to suit a disabled driver; his policy in this regard; and the way in which it is operated in each health board area. [25588/99]

The purpose of the motorised transport grant scheme is to provide financial assistance to people with disabilities who may need a car to obtain-retain employment or who are living in very isolated circumstances and have serious transport problems. This scheme is covered by circular 7/68 and modified in letters of 19 February and 15 March 1974.

The assessment of entitlement to a motorised transport grant in any individual case is a matter for the relevant health board. Accordingly, the Deputy's question has been referred to the chief executive officer, South Eastern Health Board, with a request that he examine the query and reply directly to the Deputy as a matter of urgency.
